Chapter 8

The memory played itself over and over in my mind. There was more. So much more, but I refused to break the barrier between what I’d seen and what I hadn’t.

“Harla, hey, I’m here,” Kai soothed and wrapped a blanket over my shoulders.

“I can sense there is much more to learn, and it’s close,” Meredith said, eager to continue.

Tears filled my eyes. I wasn’t a crier, but the grief and guilt were so great, I had to let it out.

“That’s enough for now. Let’s go.” The bull was back. Kai wrapped a protective arm around me and helped me stand. We were outside Meredith’s apartment quickly.

“Very well,” Meredith said, closing her door behind us.

When we were inside my apartment, Kai led me to the couch. “Are you okay?”

I wiped away the tears and sniffled. “Great,” I said. Then looked at him.

“Your eyes are back to the unique starlight color,” he said, his eyes flicking back and forth as he peered into mine.

I liked that. The color of starlight. “They weren’t?” That was probably what Meredith saw that had her surprised.

“They were like a sky blue for a few seconds.”

I wanted to trust Kai. I did. But he’d already proven that wasn’t a good idea. When it came right down to it, we would have to be enemies. Whether we wanted to or not. “That’s weird. I wonder why.”

He cupped my face, brushing his thumbs along my skin. I knew he wanted to kiss me, but he’d just been kissing Rose.

“I’m tired,” I said, standing.

Kai stood as well. “What I did with Rose, it didn’t mean anything,” he said, keeping his voice low.

“I know what you were trying to do, but I didn’t like seeing it. Nor do I want to share your mouth with other people. That’s gross.” I made a face.

He chuckled. “Sorry. Old habits.” He reached out and took my hands. “I promise I will never do that again. With anyone. Except hopefully one day soon with you.” He came in close again, and I could smell the sweat on his skin.

“Soon,” I said. “But not tonight.” I put my hands on his chest, admiring the muscle beneath his shirt.

“Fair enough.” He leaned down and kissed my cheek.

Something so small felt so intimate, and my body trembled with want. “Goodnight, Kai,” I said, hoping he got the hint I wanted to be alone with my memories.

“Are you sure? I could stay, and we could talk,” he said, shoving his hands in his pockets.

I liked the idea. “Come back later tonight. I just need some time.”

“I’ll hold you to that,” he said and left.

Heaving a giant breath, I dropped back onto the couch, rolling onto my side, so I was facing the window. I longed to open it and run freely in the forest beyond. I longed to… what? All these years, I'd thought myself a friend to the monsters, but would that be the case? I took in another breath. Closed my eyes and allowed myself to wallow in the grief of missing my family.
